Lotte de Beer, first director of the Vienna People’s Opera wants to establish “her own rules”

Aged 41, this Dutch artist was awarded as a revelation by the International Opera Awards in 2015. She notably staged the Triptych by Puccini in 2017 for the Bavarian Opera. She was appointed for five years at the head of the Volksoper in a lyrical landscape which she still considers very “patriarchal”.
The Dutch Monkfish Beer takes over the management of the Vienna People’s Opera on Thursday, becoming the first woman to hold this position in an environment that she still considers to be dominated by the “patriarchy“. Born in the Netherlands, this remarkable 41-year-old opera director was awarded as a revelation by the International Opera Awards in 2015. She has since been invited by major European stages.

An opera house painted pink
Her designation for five years at the Volksoper by the Green Secretary of State for Culture Andrea Mayer is all the more important in her eyes as she will be able to “to establish its own rules“. It intends to adapt the programming to the “changing times”. “When times are good, art should shake people up and wake them up”she explains on the institution’s website. “But when things get dark and uncertain around us, maybe it’s better to entertain”, she adds, intending to break down the barriers between opera, operetta and musical comedy. The Viennese People’s Opera has been repainted pink to signal the change to passers-by and invite spectators to see life in pink during a performance.
Lotte de Beer intends to stage several projects herself each year and in the autumn will intertwine two works by Tchaikovsky, the opera Iolanta and ballet Nutcracker, to make it a single story. Inaugurated in 1898 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the Volksoper was intended to attract a more popular audience than the Vienna State Opera (Staatsoper).
He will have seen 23 directors pass to his head in 124 years, including the baritone Ioan Holender. Lotte de Beer succeeds the German actor Robert Meyer, who remained at the head of the institution for fifteen years, a record.
