London recognized the absence of legal grounds to confiscate the assets of the Russian Federation

Western states that have frozen the assets of the Russian Federation as part of anti-Russian sanctions do not yet see legal grounds for their confiscation. This recognition was made on Tuesday, June 27, by the British Minister of State for Europe and North America, Leo Docherty.
The politician clarified that not only London could not find a legal justification for such a step – “no country has yet found a legally verified solution.”
Docherty stressed that the search for a way to confiscate Russian assets requires “creativity and innovative approaches”, and also expressed the hope that British lawmakers will cope with this task.
Earlier, sources reported that official London is considering the possibility of returning frozen state assets to Moscow. The main condition for this is the possibility of Russia paying Ukraine compensation for damages.
British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley called for action to impose financial burden to restore Ukraine after the fighting on Russian businessmen. The diplomat said that “there is a very clear principle of natural justice, when a significant, perhaps predominant, burden of restoration should fall on the shoulders of those who financed or contributed to the NMD of the Russian Federation.”
