Lola and Vitamin have replenishment!

On July 25, in Moscow, at the Zoo Strana ENOTIYA, a pair of marmosets, Lola and Vitamin, had two babies.

Now they are under the watchful eye of their parents – mother Lola does not let them go even for a minute and vigilantly monitors their nutrition and mood. It is not yet possible to determine their gender, but soon experts will be able to clarify it and the babies can be given a name. Names will be chosen together by voting.

Each visitor to the mini-zoo can see, observe and personally get acquainted with primate cubs.

Lola and Vitamin appeared in “Country ENOTIYA” 2 years ago. They have come a very long way to settle in the zoo. Marmosets moved to Moscow from the Krasnoyarsk Zoo! At the end of July their first litter happened. Real young parents!

Marmosets are the smallest species of primates on Earth. They are curious, sociable and social, willingly make contact with a person.

Their average body length is 18 cm, and their weight is 240 g.

The coat of monkeys is long, soft to the touch. Adult animals have white tassels of long hair on their ears. In young animals, brushes are absent. The big toes have a claw-like nail that helps marmosets move along vertical surfaces.

The common marmoset is considered endemic to Brazil, where its main range is located, although it is also found in small numbers in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.

Common marmosets inhabit a variety of forest ecosystems, including extreme ones in the North Atlantic; coastal forest; dry, seasonal, inland forests; forested areas located in the savannah.

The basis of the diet of marmosets is plant food, which is based on tree sap, gum, latex and some resins, as well as seeds, flowers, fungi, nectar, and various fruits.

Another important nutritional source for common marmosets is insects and their larvae, on which they spend 24 to 30% of their waking time preying. In addition, they can eat snails, small lizards and tree frogs, bird eggs, chicks, and young mammals.

Common marmosets live in stable families, each of which can include up to 15 members, but the most common number of members in such a family is nine. Marmosets move through trees like squirrels.

Monkeys are quite emotional and express their feelings with facial expressions, the movement of hair on their heads and a variety of vocal signals.
