Lithuanian Foreign Ministry expels Russian embassy employee

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has declared an employee of the Russian Embassy in Vilnius persona non grata for activities incompatible with his status, reported on the website of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.
“On December 1, a representative of the Russian Embassy in Lithuania was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was handed a note declaring an employee of the Russian Embassy persona non grata in Lithuania for activities incompatible with his diplomatic status.
The employee, whose name and position are not known, must leave the country within five days.
Earlier in October, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry announced persona non grata of the Charge d’Affaires of Russia in the country, Sergei Ryabokon. Vilnius also considered his activities incompatible with the status of a diplomat, noting that his actions could be regarded as interference in the internal affairs of the host state and therefore considered a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine on February 24, European countries decided to expel some of the Russian diplomats. In March, Riga and Tallinn expelled three employees of the Russian embassy each, and four were expelled from Lithuania. On April 6, the Latvian side announced the expulsion of 13 Russian diplomats, the Estonian – 14. Later, Latvia and Lithuania announced the closure of the Russian consulates in Daugavpils, Liepaja and Klaipeda. Estonia has decided to close the Russian consulate in Narva and the consular department in Tartu.
At the end of April, the Russian side decided to close the general consulates of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in St. Petersburg and Pskov. All employees of the closed consulates have been declared persona non grata, and consular employees and employees of the administrative and technical staff of these institutions who are not Russian citizens are unacceptable.
