The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry handed a note of protest to the Russian Charge d’Affaires in the republic, Sergei Ryabokon, in connection with his statements about the clashes in 1991 between supporters of the restoration of the country’s independence and the Soviet military, the republic’s foreign ministry reports.
“The note expresses indignation at the public statements of the charge d’affaires, which belittle the events of January 1991,” the message says.
Earlier, the Lithuanian side suggested asking Russians intending to enter Lithuania about the ownership of Crimea. To this, Ryabokon noted that Lithuanian citizens at the border can be asked what they think about the version, according to which on January 13, 1991, “their own people shot at their own.”
On January 13, 1991, clashes took place between supporters of the restoration of Lithuanian independence, on the one hand, and military personnel of the USSR Armed Forces and members of the National Salvation Committee of the Lithuanian SSR. This happened less than a year after the announcement of Lithuania’s secession from the USSR.
Most of the clashes took place in Vilnius, although these days the Soviet troops seized communication centers and civilian facilities, there was increased patrolling of roads in other settlements of the republic – in the suburbs of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, and the army was occupied by the Siauliai city hall.
