Books by Fyodor Dostoevsky, like other classical literature, will not be removed from sales due to the law banning LGBT propaganda. This was announced by the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein.
“The books of Dostoevsky, Proust, Plato, Zweig, Murakami, Wilde, as well as all the other classics, are not in danger according to our laws on combating LGBT propaganda…” wrote Alexander Khinshtein in Telegram channel.
The deputy also said that Megamarket, which verified “Kommersant” on the relevance of the list of those prohibited for sale under the LGBT law, “spread a deliberate lie” and is now conducting an internal investigation.
According to Alexander Khinshtein, in November and December 2022, after an appeal from the Association of Internet Trade Companies (AKIT), the State Duma held meetings with the participation of Roskomnadzor, Rospotrebnadzor and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “This ‘black list’ was also discussed there: as a set of certain ‘fears’ of the industry, which, thank God, were not confirmed,” the deputy added. The result of the meetings, he said, was the development of “a unified algorithm for the actions of the industry and the state.”

The list of 250 titles included works by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Stephen King, Haruki Murakami, Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Stefan Zweig. Later, a representative of AKIT reported that the developed list was “now irrelevant.”
In December 2022, the president signed a law banning LGBT propaganda on the Internet, media, books, audiovisual services, cinema and advertising. In the fall of 2023, the Supreme Court of Russia banned the activities of the formally non-existent “International LGBT Social Movement” and declared it extremist.
