The fresh appearance of flowers in the store does not mean at all that they will remain so after purchase – this is an axiom. Let’s see what tricks sellers can resort to.
The simplest rule for keeping a bouquet fresh is proper pruning of the stems, says florist Veronika Chudnovskaya. – You need to do this with a sharp knife and cut obliquely. If you try to “cut off the ends” with scissors, you will deform the stems and squeeze the tubules through which water enters the bud. The second rule: there should be only a stem in the water, and no leaves, because they are the source of the spread of bacteria. The water dries out too quickly.
The expert said that most manipulations to give a presentation are carried out with a rose.
If in doubt about freshness, look closely at the bottom of the flower. You will see how many outer petals have been removed. The more torn petals, the older the rose, says Chudnovskaya. – To slow down or speed up the opening of buds, florists resort to various technical tricks. For example, in order for roses to bloom faster, you need to cut or split their stem and put it in warm water. Cold water will allow the buds to stay closed longer. But in order for, for example, tulips to remain closed, they need to be wrapped in paper and put in the refrigerator.
In fresh roses, the sepals support the bud and are directed upwards; in stale ones, they are lowered down. But the main indicator of the freshness of a flower is its elasticity. Squeeze the bud, and then slightly bend the outer petals. If after that they quickly return to their original place, then the flower is still fresh enough. And if they remain bulging, you already have a withering copy in front of you.
By the way, there are many techniques for resuscitation of broken flowers or prevention. For example, gerberas or ranunculus, in which the stem breaks easily, are wrapped with green floral tape before planting in a bouquet. Individual petals or evergreen leaves can be glued with special glue if necessary for the composition. Thin wire can be used if a bouquet is made in which the flowers must be at a certain angle. For example, if you wrap a tulip with such wire, its stem can be bent at different angles.
In order for a bouquet of stale flowers to have a marketable appearance, there are some other tricks, – says the capital’s florist Nika Zotova. – To eliminate such petal defects as spots and dried edges, the flower can be “soldered” in concentrated water with aniline dye. Thus, a rose from white can become blue, and from pink – purple. That’s just the life of such a flower is only 2 days.
Nika also said that they still apply glitter to the buds, use a lot of shiny packaging, add unnecessary decor in the form of toys, and cut off falling petals.

1. If you decide to add products to the water that prolong the life of flowers, you do not need to change the water in the vase, but you need to add it with a new portion of fertilizer. If you use ordinary water, you need to change it every day and wash the vase.
2. To prevent the bouquet from wilting, florists advise taking ordinary cheap hairspray at home. Such a suspicious-looking tool works. If you lightly sprinkle them with petals, then they will not fade longer and retain their color. Florists use a special spray to shine the leaves, which slows down photosynthesis and prevents dust from settling.
3. In fashionable fruit bouquets, flowers wither immediately. Because fruits (especially apples) release ethylene, which leads to premature wilting. A short life awaits and a bouquet that just stands next to a vase of fruit.
4. A bouquet in a box or basket (that is, in a floristic sponge) in its original form lives only 2-3 days.
