Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said that, according to current data from Rosstat, life expectancy in the country by the end of 2023 will increase to 73.4 years. According to the results of 2022, life expectancy in Russia was 72.8 years.
“According to operational data from Rosstat, in 2023, in the country as a whole, life expectancy reached 73.4 years. Thus, at a faster pace, the significant decline in this indicator that occurred during the pandemic of the new coronavirus infection was overcome and made up for,” said Mr. Murashko, speaking via video link at the “Healthcare of Siberia” forum in Novosibirsk (quoted from RIA Novosti).
Life expectancy measures the number of years a person born in a given year could expect to live if, throughout the life of his hypothetical generation, the mortality rate remained the same as in the year for which the indicator was calculated.
The head of the Ministry of Health noted that life expectancy from 2021 to 2022 in Russia increased by 2.6 years and amounted to 72.7 years. The target value for this period was 71 years. He also emphasized that the strategic goal is to increase life expectancy in the country to 78 years by 2030.
According to the forecast of the Social Fund of Russia, the absolute number of births in 2024 will decrease by 5.8%, in 2026 the rate of decline will slow to 0.9%. This year, authorities expect 1.245 million people to be born in Russia. This is the minimum since 1999, when 1.215 million were born.
