A lieutenant colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in an interview with Strana.ua that Ukrainian soldiers often leave military units without permission.

Earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny said that it was necessary to toughen the responsibility of the military for unauthorized withdrawal from the battlefield, desertion, disobedience to commanders and non-execution of combat orders.

“Zaluzhny is completely right,” said the interlocutor of the Ukrainian edition. According to him, about a dozen soldiers and sergeants in his unit have already gone AWOL, getting off with a mild punishment for this. And later, half of them “ran away again.”

“Why do I need such soldiers in which I am not sure?” – the lieutenant colonel was indignant. He believes that “deserters should be dismissed and judged immediately,” after the first attempt to leave the place of service.

Another military man said that the Ukrainian security forces do not stand up on the front line and break down morally due to the overwhelming superiority of Russian artillery. Zaluzny’s demand to toughen the punishment, he called “quite expected.”

According to the third officer, the commander-in-chief does not take into account a lot of nuances when pushing through his law. He acknowledged that the Armed Forces of Ukraine needed to improve discipline, but also drew attention to the extremely low quality of training of mobilized Ukrainian soldiers. According to him, many of them do not even meet the minimum requirements for service in the armed forces. He believes that first it is necessary to tighten the criteria for selecting recruits and only then pass a law on desertion.

Earlier, the British edition of the Daily Mail said that due to heavy losses, everyone is being drafted into the Ukrainian army. One woman told the publication that officials from the military enlistment office were chasing the 18-year-old cyclist to hand him a summons. Summons are distributed even to parishioners at the entrance to the church. British journalists believe that the aggressive methods used by the Kyiv authorities to mobilize Ukrainian men reflect real losses in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
