Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the St. Petersburg Cultural Forum, said that representatives of sexual minorities, whose lives are often talked about by creative figures in the West, are also part of society. According to him, it is important that equality is maintained in all spheres, including cultural ones. Today the Ministry of Justice reported on filing a lawsuit with the Supreme Court to recognize the “international LGBT social movement” as extremist and to ban its activities in the Russian Federation.
At the forum, Vladimir Putin said that at various cultural competitions in Western countries, in order to win something, “you need to tell, write, show something from the life of sexual minorities, transgender people and some other transformers.” “I’ll say something unexpected: they too, these topics and these people have the right to win, show, tell, because this is also part of society, what people live by. It’s bad if they only win all sorts of competitions, that’s of no use. But this is a desire for equality,” the president said.
Vladimir Putin did not comment on the Justice Ministry’s lawsuit. As the department explained, the application to recognize the “LGBT movement” as extremist was filed with the Supreme Court due to “various signs and manifestations of extremist orientation, including inciting social and religious hatred.” The hearing on the Justice Ministry’s claim will take place on November 30.
