“On February 13, 2024, Lev Alekseevich Kochetkov passed away,” says a publication on the portal of the Obninsk city administration.
Lev Kochetkov was born in a village in the Ivanovo region in 1930. His father taught mathematics, his mother was a German teacher. When Kochetkov went to a rural high school, the Great Patriotic War began, and all male teachers were sent to the battlefield.
After school, Kochetkov entered the closed faculty of the Moscow Energy Institute. After graduating from university, I ended up at the Obninskoye station in the secret laboratory “B”.
In 1959, he received the position of chief engineer of the world’s first nuclear power plant. After 48 years, the physicist was already stopping the station’s reactor. Since 1993, Kochetkov has been a leading researcher and advisor to the IPPE General Director.
