Le Monde: France thought about sending troops to Ukraine a year ago
According to the French newspaper Le Monde, the issue of sending troops to Ukraine began to be considered by Paris in the summer of 2023, long before President Emmanuel Macron’s speech on February 26, 2024, when he first voiced it publicly.
The material notes that elaboration of the issue began after Macron’s speech at the Globsec summit in Bratislava on June 1, 2023, when he supported Ukraine’s early accession to NATO and the EU. The publication recalls that at that time Kyiv and the West still hoped that the upcoming counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces would make it possible to “throw back part of the Russian troops.”
The newspaper emphasizes that the French authorities began to work on the issue of sending ground troops to Ukraine during this period and did it “in the utmost secrecy.”
The commander-in-chief of the French ground forces, Pierre Schille, confirmed to the publication that Macron’s words were not an “impromptu escalation.”
French journalists note that Macron told his circle that he was concerned about the weakness of the Ukrainian army. And on February 21, after the reburial ceremony in the Paris Pantheon of the hero of the French Resistance movement Misak Manushyan, the French leader told a narrow circle: “In any case, this year I will have to send the guys to Odessa.”
