Defenders consider their guilt unproven
On Monday, the debate of the parties in the case of the murder of the well-known businessman and philanthropist Shabtai Kalmanovich continued in the Moscow City Court. Let us recall that earlier prosecutor Maria Semenenko asked to sentence those accused of the murder of Bagautdin Kostoev to life imprisonment, Ali Belkhoroev to 25 years, and Batyr Tumgoev to 24 years in prison.
As the MK reporter reported from the courtroom, Tumgoev’s lawyer Ruslan Khasanov stressed that the entire charge was based on billing phone calls from ten years ago. His colleague Sergei Afanasiev emphasized that Tumgoev’s role was insignificant, and also objected to the case being qualified under the article of the Criminal Code “attempted murder of two persons.” The lawyer insisted that the driver of the Mercedes, in which Kalmanovich was shot, had been slightly wounded.
Armine Oveyan, the lawyer of Bagautdin Kostoev, whom the investigation considers the direct executor, stated that his guilt was not proven, and asked to acquit the defendant.
Lawyer Ali Belkhoroeva also asked to acquit her client or to impose a minimum sentence. Interestingly, just the day before, Belkhoroev refused the services of the well-known lawyer Murad Musaev and hired a new one – Victoria Leznikova.
The verdict of the defendants will be announced tomorrow at 14.00.
