Law firm sues world’s first robot lawyer for lack of education

The robot, which should have gone down in history for advising the first defendant in court using artificial intelligence, is now accused of acting without a law degree.
AI-powered app DoNotPay is facing accusations that it “impersonates a licensed legal practitioner” in a class action lawsuit filed by US law firm Edelson.
The chatbot-style robot is focused on providing legal assistance to consumers fighting large corporations.
However, the Chicago-based law firm Edelson said the service was “illegal” and that the firm itself had “poor quality” legal documents.
From a dossier released by the California Superior Court for the District of San Francisco: “Unfortunately for its clients, DoNotPay is not really an assistant, an attorney, or a law firm. DoNotPay has no legal background and is not controlled by any attorney.”
Former Stanford University student Joshua Browder founded DoNotPay in 2015 and originally intended to use it to challenge parking tickets in the UK.
The company has since expanded to the US and is now able to provide advice on a range of other matters, including flight delays, workplace rights and misleading advertising claims.
Although DoNotPay was supposed to make history by advising the first defendant with the help of a robot lawyer in court, this did not happen due to the threat of imprisonment. In January, Browder wrote on one of his social media accounts: “Bad news: after receiving threats from state bar prosecutors, it seems likely that they will put me in jail for 6 months if I bring a robot lawyer into a real courtroom.”
By the way, the UK is not the first country to try to use artificial intelligence in the courtroom. It was first made in China.
