Lavrov will head the Russian delegation to the UN General Assembly in September

The Russian delegation to the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York this autumn will be headed by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, order Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the composition of the delegation.

The delegation also included Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, heads of the committees of the Federation Council and the State Duma on international affairs Grigory Karasin and Leonid Slutsky, as well as Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

The order also appointed deputy members of the delegation, and the Foreign Ministry was instructed to approve the composition of advisers, experts and the necessary technical staff.

Last year, at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Lavrov also led Russian delegation. The visit of the Russian delegation remained in doubt for a long time, as the United States delayed the issuance of visas to diplomats, and some members of the delegation did not receive visas. In March 2023, Washington denied visas to Russian diplomats who were supposed to participate in the session of the working group.

The UN General Assembly was established in 1945 and is the main deliberative, policy-making and representative body of the world organization, it includes all 193 members of the UN. The main session of the assembly takes place in September – December of each year, and the resumed one meets from January to September if necessary.

At the end of July, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov saidthat Vladimir Putin does not yet plan to participate in the UN General Assembly in New York.
