Co-chairman of Golos Grigory Melkonyants arrested – Kommersant

Judge of the Basmanny Court of Moscow Natalia Dudar arrested the co-chairman of Golos (recognized as a foreign agent) Grigory Melkonyants for two months – until October 17 – in the case of an undesirable organization, RIA Novosti reports.
The defense of Mr. Melkonyants asked for house arrest or a ban on certain actions as a measure of restraint.
The investigation instructed that Grigory Melkonyants, “taking into account his international relations,” could influence witnesses or hide, writes Mediazona (recognized as a foreign agent), citing a correspondent.
The investigator also asked the judge to attach to the materials of the meeting a table with data on the crossing of the Russian border by Mr. Melkonyants. He, in turn, noted that both passports were confiscated from him during the search.
On August 17, the houses of Grigory Melkonyants in Moscow and 14 other Golos employees in eight regions were searched. Regarding Mr. Melkonyants excited a criminal case on the organization of the work of an undesirable NGO (part 3 of article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The maximum penalty for this part is imprisonment for up to six years.
The movement for the protection of the rights of voters “Voice” was formed in 2013. On August 18, 2021, the Ministry of Justice entered Golos into the register of foreign agents. A year later, Roskomnadzor blocked the website of the movement for publishing “inaccurate socially significant information about the Russian military operation in Ukraine.”
On September 27, 2021, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia recognized the activities of the European Network of Election Observation Organizations as undesirable. On the same day, Golos suspended its membership in this organization.
