Lavrov warned against attacks on Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria

Actions that will threaten the security of Russian peacekeepers in the unrecognized republic of Transnistria will be regarded as a direct attack on Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with students and professors at MGIMO.
“Everyone must understand that any action that will endanger the safety of our military [в Приднестровье]will be considered in accordance with international law as an attack on Russia,” said the head of the Foreign Ministry (quote according to RIA Novosti), comparing such an event with the attack on Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia in 2008. In addition, the minister recalled that a group of Russian military personnel was stationed in Transnistria, guarding Europe’s largest ammunition depot in Kolbasna.
Transnistria was formed on September 2, 1990 on the Moldovan territories. The inhabitants of the republic, whose population is predominantly Russian-speaking, opposed the radical politicians from Moldova, who sought to secede from the USSR and unite with Romania. Chisinau tried to solve the problem by force, but Russia intervened in the conflict in July 1992, bringing in peacekeepers. At the moment, peacekeepers are still in Transnistria to allow the authorities of Chisinau and Tiraspol to conduct diplomatic negotiations without the use of forceful methods of solution.
