The West is trying to persuade Russia to agree to an unrealistic scheme to reconnect Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT through a branch in Luxembourg, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following the G20 summit in New Delhi.
Commenting on the possibility of resuming the grain deal, Lavrov recalled the letter from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The text of the appeal, according to him, “contrary to diplomatic ethics, was leaked to the media.”
“It seems that they are again trying to use the secretary general to promote unilateral approaches,” the minister said.
Lavrov explained that the whole point of this appeal is to call on Russia to urgently resume the grain deal in exchange for reconnecting Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT within a month.
“About SWIFT and Rosselkhozbank, this is not true, because no one promised, including Mr. Guterres, that Rosselkhozbank will be returned to SWIFT. They are trying to persuade us to agree to a completely unrealistic scheme for the bank’s branch in Luxembourg to play this function,” said the head of the Foreign Ministry.
He added that this branch does not have a license for banking operations, “has exhausted its capabilities and will be closed.”
To resume Russia’s participation in the grain deal, it is necessary to connect to the SWIFT payment system Rosselkhozbankand not its subsidiary, stated formerly the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.
