Lavrov said about the huge risk of nuclear war in the event of a clash of nuclear powers

The risk of a non-nuclear clash between nuclear powers escalating into a nuclear war is enormous. This statement was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference on European security issues.

“We, as I have already said, were ready to go further and say that not only is it impossible to unleash a nuclear war, but any war between nuclear powers is also unacceptable. Even if someone decides to start it by conventional means, the risk of escalating into a nuclear war will be huge, ”said the minister (quote according to TASS).

Lavrov pointed to a joint statement by Russia and the United States in June 2021, in which the countries emphasized the inadmissibility of starting a nuclear war, since it “cannot be won by anyone.” He added that a similar statement was made by five other nuclear powers.

The day before, November 30, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized the inadmissibility of any clash of states possessing nuclear weapons. “Russia’s position goes further: in addition to the inadmissibility of such a war, it is necessary to avoid any military clash between nuclear powers, even with the use of conventional weapons,” Lavrov said.

Russian-American talks took place on November 14 in Ankara. The information was confirmed by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov. He noted that the meeting was held at the initiative of the United States. The heads of the Foreign Intelligence Service and the CIA, Sergei Naryshkin and William Burns, discussed the issues of non-use of nuclear weapons during the talks, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

In addition, the position on the inadmissibility of the use of nuclear weapons was formulated in a joint statement of the G20 countries, adopted following the summit in Bali on November 15-16.
