Lavrov: Russia does not refuse negotiations with Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia does not refuse negotiations with Ukraine. “But the longer Kyiv refuses, the more difficult it will be to negotiate,” he said.

During a press conference following the results of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, answering a question about the possibility of negotiations, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry gave a brief history of the contacts that had taken place, starting from the first rounds of negotiations in Belarus.

The last contact, he said, took place in Istanbul, where the relevant papers from Ukraine were handed over to the Russian side, outlining the principles of the settlement. Russia set forth these principles in the “language of the treaty.” After that, the Ukrainian side did not get in touch, further making it clear in every possible way that it would not negotiate. Lavrov believes that Ukraine in this important issue is completely dependent on instructions from across the ocean and from the European Union.

“So there is no need to hang the label of refuseniks on us,” he concluded.
