Lavrov did not agree with Armenia that Russia “surrendered” Karabakh to Azerbaijan

Statements by Armenian officials that the Russian Federation allegedly surrendered Nagorno-Karabakh are untrue. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced this during a press conference following the G20 summit.
“Some figure, I think the head of parliament, allowed himself to speak out in the sense that Russia gave Karabakh to Azerbaijan. It’s hard to imagine a more incorrect and dishonest statement,” said the Russian diplomat.
Lavrov said that the Armenian side expressed claims to Moscow that Karabakh was allegedly given to Baku when the presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, as well as Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, signed the first trilateral agreements in November 2020.
According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, this document does not talk about the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, and all officials at the negotiations said that this issue would still be discussed. In addition, the Russian minister recalled that in Prague, during the meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev, a statement was signed according to which the parties recognize the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991.
“All questions are closed,” Lavrov concluded.
In addition, the Foreign Minister emphasized that Pashinyan signed a document according to which the Nagorno-Karabakh region is recognized as the territory of Azerbaijan.
