Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called one of the results of the special military operation “cleansing Russian society” of people who “did not feel a connection with Russian culture.” The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry is convinced that the military operation has united the Russians.

“The special military operation has long had a very positive impact on our internal life, brought our society together to an unprecedented degree and contributed to its cleansing of people who did not feel involved in Russian, Russian history and Russian culture. Some of them left, some stayed and began to think, but the overwhelming majority of society rallied like never before,” said Sergei Lavrov at press conferences based on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2023.

The minister recalled a quote from satirist Mikhail Zhvanetsky that “our people need a big war to truly unite.” “It seems like even with humor. But there is some truth in every joke,” Mr. Lavrov concluded.

Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov in November 2023 saidthat “The Motherland is always open to everyone except enemies.” According to him, Russian citizens who left the country after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine are not in danger when returning to Russia.
