Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at a meeting of the UNESCO Commission, recalled that the organization’s original mission was to unite peoples on the basis of moral and intellectual solidarity. However, now the bloc logic and the divisive philosophy of “friend or foe” have begun to appear more and more clearly.
The Russian minister noted that they were trying to aggressively push Moscow out of the governing bodies of UNESCO, using unscrupulous methods, including financial blackmail of the countries of the East and South.
According to Lavrov, Russia under these conditions was not re-elected to the organization’s executive board, although it had the support of more than half of UNESCO members.
“But it was not possible to “cancel” Russia from UNESCO,” the minister emphasized, adding that in Russia a lot of projects are being implemented through the organization and Moscow is committed to promoting a unifying agenda in various international organizations, including UNESCO.
