In particular, Lavrov recalled that the leadership and all UN employees must comply with the principles of impartiality and equidistance and that UN documents cannot contain “double standards” in relation to different territories.” The minister also appealed to Guterres to “prevent representatives of UN structures from being drawn into politicized initiatives in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.”
In addition, the parties discussed the topic of “reforming the UN in order to adapt it to modern realities, with an emphasis on Guterres’ “Our Common Agenda” initiative.” In turn, Lavrov emphasized the importance of taking into account the opinions of all states that are members of the UN. He also confirmed that Russia will take an active part in discussions on this topic within the framework of the Future Summit, which will be held on September 23, 2024, as well as in the preparation of the final document, the Pact for the Future.
Lavrov also called for the launch of an arbitration procedure against the United States due to the fact that they are violating their obligations, including denying visas to diplomats from Russia to participate in UN events.
The meeting between Lavrov and Guterres took place on September 21 on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. In addition to Guterres, the Russian Foreign Minister also held meetings with the chairman of Yemen’s governing council, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Thailand, Cuba, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Pakistan and the head of the Sovereign Council of Sudan.
