Novel. “Stöld”, by Ann-Helén Laestadius
Since time immemorial, the image of the Sami has been inseparable from that of their reindeer. The nomadic people live in symbiosis with this animal, source of income and food, precious treasure and faithful companion. The injury to a reindeer is an injury to its master, a wound he feels in his flesh. Stold (” flight “ in Swedish) tells the story of a fawn killed in front of a 9-year-old girl. Ann-Helén Laestadius, Swedish novelist of Sami origin, based her story on real events. It recreates the particular atmosphere of daily life in northern Scandinavia, shedding light on the sometimes conflicting relationships between the populations who live there.
