Latvian Prime Minister Karins announces his resignation

Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins announced that he will submit his resignation to President Edgars Rinkevics on Thursday, August 17. About it informed Latvian public media portal Rus.LSM.lv

The prime minister said that the development of the country requires a strong and dynamic government capable of making difficult decisions. Karins also called on his New Unity party to nominate another candidate for prime minister.

Under Latvian law, the Cabinet of Ministers will continue to perform its duties until the Saeima approves a new government.

On August 8, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia announced an enhanced operation of the border guard for six months from August 11, 2023 to February 10, 2024 in the administrative territories of Ludza, Kraslava, Augshdaugava counties and Daugavpils. The Latvian authorities explained the need for an enhanced regime of work “disproportionately large number of cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian border.”
