The Latvian Parliament adopted amendments under which, from September 1, 2023, Russians will not be able to renew residence permits (permits) if they do not learn the Latvian language and pass the relevant exam.

According to the press service of the Latvian parliament, before September 1, Russians who have permanent residence permits in the republic, who were previously citizens or non-citizens of Latvia, will have to provide the competent authorities with a certificate of proficiency in the state language.

Also, the Latvian parliament approved amendments to the Immigration Law of the Republic, which prohibits the issuance of long-term work visas to Russians.

Since September 19, Latvia, as well as Lithuania, Estonia and Poland have banned Russians with Schengen visas, including those issued by other countries that are members of the Schengen Agreement, from entering their territory.
