Latvia and Estonia will purchase German IRIS-T air defense systems

The heads of the Ministry of Defense of Latvia and Estonia Inara Murniece and Hanno Pevkur signed agreements on the acquisition of IRIS-T medium-range air defense systems produced by the German company Diehl Defense. The Delfi portal reports this.
As specified, previously the armed forces of Latvia were equipped exclusively with short-range air defense systems. IRIS-T can shoot down air targets at a distance of 40 kilometers and at an altitude of 20 kilometers.
The procurement of these systems and subsequent integration with existing NATO air defense systems will allow Latvia and Estonia not only to optimize their budgets, but will also provide them with the ability to conduct coordinated defense of the skies over the entire Baltic region.
The ministers also expressed their desire to take part in the Sky Shield program, which is aimed at creating a European air and missile defense system through the joint purchase of anti-aircraft/missile defense systems and missiles for them.
