NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs confirmed Cunningham’s death, but did not provide details. Cunningham’s wife, Dot Cunningham, said he died on Tuesday, but did not say where or cause of death.
Cunningham was one of three astronauts aboard the 1968 Apollo 7 mission, an 11-day flight that broadcast live broadcasts from orbit. This flight set the stage for the moon landing in less than a year.
Cunningham is survived by his wife, sister Kathy Cunningham, and children Brian and Kimberly.
