In the second quarter of 2022, a record number of labor migrants entered Russia, according to a review by the consulting company FinExpertiza, based on migration statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In April-June of this year, their number reached 3.12 million people, which exceeds the figures for the same period over the past six years.
During the quarter, 4.16 million foreigners got registered with migration registration at the place of stay, while 75% of them indicated work as the purpose of their arrival. This is a third more than it was in the same period last year (2.34 million), a quarter more than the figure for the first quarter of this year and almost ten times the number of people who entered for work in the second quarter of pandemic 2020, when restrictions were introduced. to the border crossing.
As the authors of the review note, the growth of interest in working in the Russian Federation was influenced by the strengthening of the ruble, due to which the earnings of visitors in terms of the currency of other countries increased. In addition, thanks to the “migration amnesty” announced during the pandemic in 2021, many of those who came to the country were able to obtain legal status, which also increased the attractiveness of the Russian labor market (see “Kommersant” dated July 1).
Almost half of all those who came to the Russian Federation in the second quarter to work are natives of Uzbekistan (1.54 million people, or 49.6%), a third are immigrants from Tajikistan (952 thousand people, or 30.5%). In third place are those who came from Kyrgyzstan (223.4 thousand people, or 7.2%). In addition to them, citizens of Armenia (108.2 thousand people, or 3.5%), Azerbaijan (79 thousand people, or 2.5%), Belarus (42.7 thousand people) also entered the Russian labor market in the second quarter , or 1.4%), Kazakhstan (34.6 thousand people, or 1.1%), China (32.2 thousand people, or 1%).
As expected, Moscow and the Moscow region turned out to be the most attractive for visitors, where a total of 1.24 million people registered. In second place are St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region (385.7 thousand, or 12.4% of all labor migrants), in third place is the Krasnodar Territory (86.2 thousand, or 2.8%). Also among the regional centers of attraction for migrants were Irkutsk (75.2 thousand people, or 2.4%) and Sverdlovsk regions (69.3 thousand people, or 2.2%), Primorsky Krai (57.4 thousand people , or 1.8% of those who arrived).
