Head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Alexander Kurenkov checked work to strengthen the dam in Kurgan on the Tobol River. During a conversation with reporters, he called this year’s spring flood the largest in recent decades. He instructed local authorities to pay more attention to warning residents about evacuation.
“It is necessary to notify residents of the impending disaster. This year’s floods are record highs in many decades. It is necessary to evacuate people in advance and provide targeted support,” said Mr. Kurenkov, noting that special attention should be paid to residents with limited mobility, pensioners, children and single citizens.
The message from the Ministry of Emergency Situations notes that about 4 thousand employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and city services, as well as volunteers and local residents, are involved in bank protection work in Kurgan. “Everyone is trying to help each other: volunteers, residents of the city and neighboring regions – all services work day and night. It cannot be any other way in our country,” said the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
As of today, April 16, the water in the Tobol River has risen to 742 cm. The regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the water level in the Tobol River is rapidly growing, about a thousand houses and plots are flooded in the Kurgan region. Since April 8, a state of emergency has been in effect in the region.
