Russian President Vladimir Putin conceptually supported the idea of ​​raising the draft age, press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

At the briefing, a Kremlin representative was asked to explain why it might be necessary to raise the draft age during the next spring draft, which was previously allowed in the State Duma.

“In this case, this is exclusively the prerogative of the Ministry of Defense. Conceptually, this idea was indeed supported by the head of state, but the details, the design of this idea – here information from the Ministry of Defense should and should be taken as a primary source, ”he said.

Earlier, the head of the State Duma Committee on Defense Andrei Kartapolov said that the spring conscription, which should begin on April 1, maybe go through the new draft age system. According to him, at first the conscription will be of a mixed type, that is, men aged 18 to 30 will be subject to it. The full transition will take place within one to three years.

After that, Deputy Head of the State Duma Defense Committee Yuri Shvytkin did not rule outthat the rule on raising the draft age to 21 may come into force as early as 2023.

Gradually increase the draft age from 18 to 21 years, and the limit – from 27 to 30 years offered Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu during an expanded meeting of the collegium of the Russian Defense Ministry on December 21. He also called for an increase in the number of military personnel to 1.5 million. Putin then supported these changes.

According to the current legislation, the draft age in Russia starts at 18 and ends at 27. The beginning and end of the military age comes on the day of birth. Any attempts to call for military service that do not correspond to these age indicators are considered illegal. Spring conscription should last from April 1 to July 15.
