Ukraine is trying to put pressure on NATO countries to show solidarity on the issue of its entry into the alliance, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President.
Journalists asked US President Joe Biden to comment on his words that now “Ukraine is not ready for NATO membership.”
“We know that a very lively discussion is underway among the member countries of the Alliance, especially on the eve of the NATO summit. We know that the Kiev regime is trying to put pressure on everyone in a variety of ways so that as many countries as possible demonstrate their solidarity on this issue on the eve of this summit,” Peskov replied.
At the same time, Peskov added that the accession of Ukraine to NATO would lead to extremely negative consequences for the “already dilapidated security architecture” of Europe. For Russia, this will become an “absolute danger”, which will require a “quite clear and firm” reaction.
Biden said on July 7 in an interview with CNN that now is not the right time to decide on Ukraine’s accession to NATO for a number of reasons. The main one is the ongoing armed conflict with Russia, which would force them to comply with the obligations to protect “NATO territory” in accordance with the fifth article of the alliance treaty.
In addition, Biden noted that now “Ukraine is not ready for NATO membership,” as there are other requirements for the members of the alliance, for example, in terms of their democratization.
The NATO summit will be held in Vilnius on July 11-12. On June 16, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ruled out the entry of Ukraine in a state of conflict into NATO. According to him, both the member countries of the bloc and Kyiv understand this. At the same time, Stoltenberg specified, “the doors of the alliance are open.” He noted that the countries of the bloc are planning to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine at the NATO summit.
