Korotchenko: Israel needs “surgical” military successes in Gaza

Israel currently does not need a large-scale ground operation in the Gaza Strip; the Jewish state is primarily interested in “surgical” military successes, said interview “Parliamentary newspaper” military expert Igor Korotchenko. At the same time, according to the analyst, the main goal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) remains solving the problem of the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) through the complete destruction of its leaders and infrastructure.

“I believe that there will only be targeted visits to the sector – there are recommendations from Washington not to scale up the IDF’s ground military operations. And the Israeli army today needs more targeted, surgical military operations,” the specialist shared his opinion.

He admitted that the Israeli army would seek to physically destroy the entire infrastructure of the Islamic Resistance Movement and the leaders of both the military and political wings of Hamas. At the same time, according to the publication’s interlocutor, Israel will not put itself within any time frame or be limited by the norms of international humanitarian law.

At the same time, as Korotchenko noted, judging by statements about readiness to exchange hostages, the Palestinian movement is not against negotiations.

“But I think there will be no negotiations. Israel is unlikely to refuse to completely or at least in the medium term resolve the Hamas problem for itself,” he emphasized.

The expert believes that neither Iran nor the United States are interested in escalating a new conflict in the Middle East. Tehran is currently behaving extremely pragmatically, strengthening its position through political rhetoric, while Jerusalem is bogged down in war, Korotchenko concluded.

On October 7, Israel was subjected to a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip as part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, announced by Hamas. After this, fighters from the military wing of the Palestinian movement penetrated into the border areas in the south of the Jewish state, where they opened fire on the military and civilians, and also took hostages. In Israel, according to local authorities, more than 1.4 thousand people were killed, including 300 military personnel, and more than 5 thousand were injured.

In response, the IDF launched Operation Iron Swords against Hamas in Gaza. Within a few days, the Israeli military took control of all settlements near the border with Gaza and began carrying out airstrikes on targets in the enclave. Israel also announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip.
