Kommersant: hacker attacks on playgrounds in Russia have tripled

In the first six months, the number of hacker attacks on the gaming segment of the Russian IT market has tripled compared to the number of threats for the entire last year. About it writes “Kommersant” with reference to the report of the company DDoS-Guard (specializes in protection against DDoS attacks).
We are talking about hacking game servers, browser games, information sites on gaming topics, sites of game values, as well as forums for administrators and developers of gaming services.
According to the report, in the first half of the year, Russian gaming resources were attacked three times more often than in the whole of 2021. In 2022, this segment accounted for 9% of the total number of hacker attacks. It is also noted that in January – June, resources were attacked 6200 times, and for the same period last year – only 1900 times.
“An unbearable number of malicious requests are sent to the game server, causing it to temporarily go down. While the server owner is looking for a way to bring it back to life, attackers get the necessary data, ”Dmitry Nikonov, head of DDoS-Guard protection, explained the motivation of the hackers. He added that hackers can also get game values with a real monetary value.
Speaking about the reasons for the sharp increase in the number of attacks, Dmitry Galov, an expert in cybersecurity at Kaspersky Lab, is sure that it is caused by a general surge in this problem in Russia. Qrator Labs founder Alexander Lyamin also notes that game companies often neglect protection against DDoS attacks. According to him, the gaming community is very attractive to cybercriminals, since hacking games is a profitable business.
In January 2022, PwC analysts reported that the video game market in Russia grew by 7.7% to RUB 158 billion. Even before the crisis caused by sanctions against the background of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, experts predicted an increase in the gaming industry by 5% per year. It was expected that by 2025 it would reach 186.5 billion rubles.
