The mayor’s office of the Dagestan Kizilyurt, which announced the day before the cancellation of the celebration of the city’s 60th anniversary scheduled for October 7 due to the detention of mayor Magomed Magomedov by security forces, revised its decision a day later. A staff meeting was devoted to discussing the issue that became the subject of a dispute between the city authorities and the State Duma deputy from Dagestan, following which the mayor’s office decided to hold a holiday as a sign of “respect” for the mayor and “love for the native city.”

As Kommersant previously reported, the city hall announced the decision to postpone the celebration “indefinitely” after the arrest of the city mayor Magomed Magomedov. He was detained by security forces on October 3, and the next day the Basmanny District Court of Moscow decided to place the mayor in custody for two months.

Magomed Magomedov, who headed the Republican Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports from 2012 to 2021, became involved in a criminal case for embezzlement on an especially large scale (Part 4 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code). Along with him, the head of the Department of Physical Culture, Sports and Reserve Training of the Ministry of Sports, Khalitbeg Makhachev, is involved in the case.

Message the cancellation of City Day and the celebration of its 60th anniversary appeared on the city hall’s information resources on Wednesday morning, even before the charges against the mayor were officially announced (city administration notified only about the search being carried out in the city hall building).

“As you all know, on October 7 we planned to grandly celebrate our common holiday with you – the 60th anniversary of our native Kizilyurt,” the message said. “But for obvious reasons, there is no festive mood in the city. In this regard, the city district administration decided to postpone the date of the celebration indefinitely.”

The mayor’s office apologized to the townspeople and invited guests, as well as “to everyone who canceled their plans and was determined to come to Kizilyurt” to celebrate the anniversary. “We will definitely get together and celebrate our holiday! Together! In full force! As planned,” was how the message originally ended.

State Duma deputy from Dagestan Sultan Khamzaev promptly responded to the decision of the city authorities. “If someone in the administration is not in the mood, this does not mean that the whole city is not in the mood! – he wrote in his Telegram channel.—Kizilyurt must celebrate its 60th anniversary, on which I congratulate all the residents of this beautiful city! I’ll say more! Any detention of a corrupt official is a moral holiday among people! There is no mourning either in Kizilyurt or in other cities and regions of Dagestan for the detained officials!”

After some time, the mayor’s office responded to the deputy with a postscript to its message. “Perhaps not everyone is in the mood,” it said. “There are those who would not be against the holiday. But there is one more important point: the event from start to finish was carried out on the initiative and efforts of Magomed Yusupovich (Magomedov.— “Kommersant”). The city was not allocated budgetary funds for the anniversary; everything was financed by patrons who expressed their readiness to support Magomed Yusupovich’s initiative and were ready to finance all costs.”

Nevertheless, this morning the city authorities announced on the city hall’s Telegram channel that they were reviewing the decision to cancel the holiday. At a staff meeting, the first deputy head of the city administration, Malik Patakhov, said that the mayor’s office was receiving appeals from relatives, friends and like-minded people of the arrested mayor with a request not to postpone the celebration.

“Magomed Yusupovich was preparing for the holiday, he really wanted to hold it, and I believe that celebrating the birthday of Kizilyurt will be a sign of respect for our head and, of course, a manifestation of respect and love for his native city,” he said, addressing the staff of the apparatus.

The apparatus expressed its readiness to support the work started by the head of Kizilyurt, the press service of the mayor’s office reported, and to hold the holiday on October 7.

As part of it, a Republican agricultural fair will be organized in the city on Saturday, and sports and entertainment events will be held. “All guests of the holiday will be treated to hot pilaf, traditional mountain cereal soup, sweets and tea. The administration of the city district, as well as the business community of Kizilyurt, will make every effort to give the townspeople a holiday and celebrate the 60th anniversary of their hometown!” – assured municipal officials.
