Kirby: US concerned about Xi Jinping’s intention to achieve a truce in Ukraine

Strategic Communications Coordinator at the National Security Council John Kirby expressed concern that Chinese President Xi Jinping is using a visit to Russia to echo the call for a truce in Ukraine that would leave Russian troops there.
“We are concerned that … China will reiterate calls for a ceasefire that would leave Russian troops on sovereign Ukrainian territory,” Kirby said. He stressed that the United States would like China to facilitate both the end of hostilities and the withdrawal of Russian troops.
Kirby reiterated that the US found it unacceptable to have a ceasefire in Ukraine without a Russian withdrawal, as it would allow Russia to gain a foothold and then “restart the war at a more favorable time for them.”
