A group of deputies of the Majilis (lower house of parliament) of Kazakhstan “Zhana Kazakhstan” (“New Kazakhstan”) proposed to return the former name of the capital of the republic to Astana instead of the current Nur-Sultan, follows from the statement of the deputies.

“We consider it wrong when during the life of a person a city is called by his name, besides, the people also did not accept the new name of the capital. Therefore, it will be historically fair to return the former name of the capital Astana, which was once proposed by the first president [Нурсултаном Назарбаевым]”, – the statement says (quote according to TASS).

The deputies noted that this decision will take into account the contribution of the former head of state to the formation and development of the main city of the country, as well as meet the needs and expectations of citizens.

The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, earlier proposed holding early presidential elections in the republic in the fall of 2022. He emphasized that he puts the interests of the state above all else, and therefore is ready to shorten his term of office. Tokayev also believes that the length of the presidential term should be changed. Tokayev also proposed limiting him to seven years and banning re-election.

Tokayev became the President of Kazakhstan on March 20, 2019 after the announcement of the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nazarbayev has headed the republic since 1990, he has held the presidency for almost 29 years.
