Export of goods from Kazakhstan to Russia from January to May 2023 increased in monetary terms compared to the same period last year by 45% – from $2.79 billion to $4.04 billion (+45%). This follows from published on July 14 preliminary data Kazakh Bureau of National Statistics.

The total trade turnover with Russia for the five months of 2023 reached $10.5 billion ($9.59 in the same period in 2022). The share of Russia in the trade turnover of Kazakhstan increased from 18.6% to 18.8%. In general, in January-May 2023, the trade turnover of Kazakhstan with the EAEU countries increased by 10.5% to $11.43 billion ($10.34 billion for the five months of 2022).

Exports to EU countries from Kazakhstan fell to $13.35 billion from January to May in 2023 compared to $14.77 billion in the same period in 2022. The share of the EU in Kazakhstan’s exports fell from 43.2% to 42.3%.

Trade turnover with the EU in January-May 2023 in Kazakhstan increased to $17.7 billion from $17.15 billion in the same period in 2022. This was due to imports from the EU, which increased to $4.35 billion from $2.38 billion in the first five months of 2022, and its share increased in monetary terms from 13.6% to 19.1%.

In late April, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Brian Nelson visited Kazakhstan and neighboring Central Asian countries to discuss with the authorities of these countries the observance of Western sanctions against Russia and opposition to their circumvention. And at the end of February, the European Union introduced the 10th package of sanctions on the anniversary of the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

Indicators on the physical volumes of exports from Kazakhstan to Russia from January to May have not yet been published, but statistics from January to April were published at the end of June. There is a different and more contradictory situation. So, in January-April 2023, 9.6 million tons of goods were exported from Kazakhstan to Russia. This is 2.98 million tons, or 23.7% less than in the same period a year earlier.

Stanislav Pritchin, senior researcher at the Center for Post-Soviet Studies at IMEMO RAS, notes that the importance of Kazakhstan as a hub for the import of goods from foreign markets is only increasing.

Some stagnation in key positions in the trade turnover between Russia and Kazakhstan, both in exports and imports, may be associated with external market conditions, Alexei Bezborodov, CEO of Infranews, agrees.
