Kamila Valieva won the sixth stage of the Russian Grand Prix in Moscow. Not without difficulty, unable to control the quadruple toe loop, and then falling again – on the triple lutz. But she won. And mistakes… As Kamila said after the short program, they happen because “you want to squeeze the maximum out of yourself for which you are not yet ready.”
In the free program, she got to go on the ice, completing the singles competition. Not the easiest thing: “When you come out sixth in the warm-up, you have 40 minutes to get to the bottom of yourself.” And here it can be different.
The fearless Sofya Muravyova was already upset, having twice unsuccessfully tried to perform a treacherous triple axel. Moreover, there was a triple Lutz, which was not counted by the judges due to a violation of the rule on the permissible number of repetitions. (Technique: 66.83 points, total rental score: 133.58 points.)
Sonya was crying. “When I got off the ice, I said: why with me today?” And she admitted: it’s not a tragedy, but for an athlete such a skate is not at all a joyful event. “I’m a very emotional person, sorry for crying.” And yet she remained persistent: she really wanted to do a triple axel. “I don’t want to try, I just want to do it.”
The militant on ice Veronica Yametova has already minted her program. She said that she was worried because she knew that she needed to at least keep her place in the top three. “I would rate my rental 9 points out of 10.” And she set her sights on the future: at the Russian Championship “I will try to prove that I can do anything.”
And only then Camila went on the ice. Then she admitted: after all, 14 years on the ice, different experiences come with it… And she remembered her previous stage in Kazan, which, due to errors not on the ice, left her outside the top three (two sequences during the free program, which is prohibited by the rules). She scolded herself and the coaches: “You still need to open up the rules sometimes. Our common mistake with the coaches, but also my responsibility.”
But in Moscow, as Kamila said, both the coaches and she herself have already “taken into account all the mistakes.” And she thanked Eteri Tutberidze, as did the entire coaching staff: “we’ve already seen everything in training.” She admitted that there were some conflicts, but she is glad that “we find mutual understanding, they try, they help me.”
The Russian championship is ahead and preparations for it are in full swing. And this is the first place – “a push to move on.” She said that she tries to combine different areas of activity: if you only do figure skating, “you’ll burn out tomorrow.” And she unexpectedly compared last season and this one: “last year it was difficult for me, but it was preparation.”
And then she reminded me how she performed a quadruple toe loop during the warm-up: “I already know that my body is more or less ready,” but I still need to work. “Everything in our sport is out of our heads: if there are doubts, they pop up at the start.”
In numbers, the results of single skaters at the stage in Moscow looked like this: Kamila Valieva – 226.22 points (in the free program for technique, the skater received 77.27 points, the total score for the skate – 144.95), Veronika Yametova – 212.75, Sofia Muravyova – 210.25.
