Journalist Hitchens: The West was mistaken in presenting Ukraine as the good side in the conflict

Journalist Peter Hitchens, who works for the British newspaper Daily Mail, said that the conflict in Ukraine could have been resolved long ago if it had not been presented as a confrontation between good and evil.

He mentioned an article titled “Will the West Abandon Ukraine?” published in Foreign Affairs magazine, which indicates that the United States and Europe are considering cutting off financial and military support for Kiev.

Hitchens believes that the conflict could have been resolved earlier if it had not been presented in a primitive, “fairytale” manner, as a battle between absolute good and absolute evil. He expressed hope for the establishment of lasting peace, as this would be in the interests of the Ukrainian people, instead of inciting and fueling armed conflict, which causes harm and takes lives.

The journalist also expressed his bewilderment at Britain’s interest in a costly and risky war in south-eastern Europe between two parts of the former Soviet empire.

Earlier, the adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, Mikhail Podolyak, said that Kyiv is against any ceasefire scenario and refuses negotiations with Moscow, because he believes that this will mean a victory for Russia.

The Kremlin noted that at the moment there are no prerequisites for a transition to a peaceful solution and the priority for the Russian Federation is to achieve the goals of the Northern Military District, which can now only be achieved through military means. At the same time, Moscow highly appreciates the efforts of countries trying to bring the solution to the Ukrainian conflict into a peaceful direction.
