Nine-time winner in Switzerland, Jornet was only able to take fifth place in the event won by Mark Kangogo.

Surprise on the prestigious Sierre-Zinal trail (Switzerland), where the Spanish legend Kilian Jornet only took 5th place in the race won on Saturday by the Kenyan Mark Kangogo, imitated by his compatriot Esther Chesang in the women’s category.

Nine-time winner of the event, notably of the last five editions, Jornet suffered a major setback at the end of the long climb located at the start of the course, creating a gap that he will never have been able to fill, becoming even surprised in the sprint by his old Eritrean rival Petro Mamu.

After blowing up the race with several compatriots, Mark Kangogo (2h 27 min 31 sec) remained the most solid throughout the 31 km (2,200 m of elevation gain), crushed by the sun until the finish in Zinal, without breaking Jornet’s event record (2h25:35 in 2019).

The 34-year-old Catalan remains expected for his big goal of the year at the end of the month in Chamonix on the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, which he has already won three times, after dominating the prestigious Hardrock 100 in July. (100 miles, about 160 km) in the United States.

Behind Kangogo, the Spaniard Andreu Blanes Reig managed the comeback of the day to clinch 2nd place, 1 min 48 behind the winner. Another Kenyan, Patrick Kipngeno, took 3rd place.

Among the women, who left a few minutes after the men, the Kenyan Esther Chesang (2h52:01) managed to resist the return of the local Maude Mathys, still holder of the record for the event (2h49:20 in 2019).
