The government of the Russian Federation has approved the project to create the world’s first transboundary reserve for Amur tigers and Amur leopards on the border with China. This protected natural area will be called the Land of the Big Cats.
The reserve will unite the Land of the Leopard National Park and the Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve in Russia, as well as the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park in China. The joint project will preserve the boundaries of the territories with enhanced coordination and cover a huge area of 1.8 million hectares, which can be home to hundreds of tigers and leopards in their natural habitat.
Within the framework of the reserve, animal monitoring, the exchange of scientific data, as well as international efforts to combat poaching and forest fires, the development of eco-education and ecotourism will be carried out. Russia’s Land of the Leopard National Park is already home to the world’s only Far Eastern leopard population and has the highest population of Amur tigers on the planet. Thanks to conservation work, the populations of these animals have tripled and began to settle in China. After the creation of the transboundary reserve, the total number of the world population of the Far Eastern leopard and tiger will be established.
