As a result of the expedition in the Sea of Azov, scientists from the Azov-Chernomorsky branch of the FGBNU “VNIRO” (“AzNIIRKh”) found out that jellyfish feel very comfortable in the area of the Taganrog Bay. This allows them to reach large sizes. It is reported by donnews.ru.
Scientists stressed that jellyfish do not pose a danger to humans, but threaten fish resources.
“Jellyfish have no natural enemies in the southern seas of Russia, and the growth of their numbers is potentially limited only by favorable environmental conditions (high salinity and water temperature) and the availability of a food base,” the scientists of AzNIIRH said.
During the research, specialists came across a cornerot. Some species reached 60 centimeters in diameter, and in weight – over 10 kg. However, the density of this species of jellyfish has become lower than it was last year.
