The Montevideo Maru, which sank in 1942, was found in the South China Sea.
The Japanese ship Montevideo Maru, sunk by an American submarine in 1942, was discovered in the South China Sea. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement on Twitter.
“Finally, the resting place for the lost souls of Montevideo Maru has been found. Among the 1,060 prisoners on board, 850 were Australian soldiers,” he said.
Montevideo Maru sank on 1 July 1942. It transported captured Australians from Papua New Guinea to Hainan Island in China. Australia considers this tragedy the largest maritime disaster in its history.
