The Japanese authorities declared the unacceptability of the position of the Russian Federation regarding the fishing of Japanese fishermen in the Russian economic zone in the region of the southern Kuril Islands. About it informed TASS with reference to the Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers Hirokazu Matsuno.
“We urge the Russian side to respond to intergovernmental consultations as soon as possible so that fishing can begin as soon as possible,” he said (quoted by TASS).
On June 7, 2022, Zakharova announced that Russia was suspending an agreement with Japan on cooperation in the field of harvesting marine living resources in response to the country freezing annual payments under the agreement. In connection with the suspension of its action, Japanese fishermen are prohibited from fishing near the southern Kuril Islands. An agreement between Russia and Japan on cooperation in the field of harvesting marine living resources was concluded in 1998. January 29 Zakharova statedthat Russia has notified Japan of the impossibility of agreeing on terms for fishing due to Tokyo’s anti-Russian sanctions.
