Japan allowed to pour water from Fukushima into the Pacific Ocean

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in its latest report presented by agency head Rafael Grossi to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, has authorized the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant to release water that was used to cool damaged reactors into the ocean. This report is the result of nearly two years of work by an IAEA task force.
As specified, the water was purified using the ALPS fluid treatment system, which removed almost all radioactivity, with the exception of tritium. Before being released, the water will be diluted to bring the tritium content below established regulatory standards.
Grossi noted that the gradual release of treated water would not have a significant radiological impact on the environment and people.
