Izvestia: the State Duma will consider a bill on voting from 16 years old

On December 12, a group of deputies from the LDPR faction will submit to the State Duma a bill to reduce the age threshold for voting in elections at all levels from 18 to 16 years old, figured out “News”.
In the explanatory note to the document, the authors of the initiative pointed out that many young Russians grow up earlier than is commonly believed, and the legislation of the Russian Federation already allows from the age of 16, for example, to get married, enter into an employment contract or engage in entrepreneurial activity.
“We are convinced that this will increase the legitimacy of the elections. Because if the age is changed, the number of voters will increase sharply: by almost 3 million. Moreover, most of them will be motivated to vote and go to the polling stations, ”commented one of its authors, the first deputy chairman of the LDPR faction, Sergei Leonov, to the publication.
The faction believes that it is at this age that young people begin to consciously assess political events, while in Russia it is now quite easy to understand what parties there are in the country and what programs they offer.
In the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, in a conversation with the newspaper, they reacted positively to the proposal of the Liberal Democratic Party, and in A Just Russia – For Truth, they were skeptical. According to the faction’s first deputy chairman Oleg Nilov, young people at this age “still don’t understand anything about politics.” United Russia stated that they would evaluate the bill after it was submitted to the State Duma.
