In Russia, by 2035, a cellular-satellite communications network may appear, writes newspaper Izvestia with reference to the draft strategy for the development of the communications industry for 2024–2035, developed by the Ministry of Digital Development.
As noted in the document, by 2030, a Russian constellation of satellites should appear in low orbit, which will provide Internet access in hard-to-reach areas. By 2035, on the basis of this grouping, it is proposed to create a hybrid communication system covering the entire territory of the country with the Internet and backing up television broadcasting. This will allow using the Internet on highways, in the Arctic zone, on the Northern Sea Route, etc.
The press service of the Ministry of Digital Development explained that these initiatives were introduced by working groups and require discussion.
Now there are no smartphones for hybrid networks of the usual small sizes on the market yet, the draft strategy says, but last year more than 15 companies expressed their intention to implement or continue work on cellular-satellite communication projects. These include Elon Musk’s Globalstar SpaceX, Chinese BeiDou, Canadian Telsat, and others. At the same time, in the US, the iPhone 14 is already equipped with the function of receiving messages via Globalstar satellites, Sergey Pekhterev, a shareholder of Ka-Internet, recalled in a comment to the publication.
The authors of the proposals also note that the market for satellite broadband access in the world by 2035 will increase by 28%, to $292 billion a year.
As it became known earlier, the draft strategy for the development of the communications industry for 2024-2035. suggests replacement of equipment on LTE networks with domestic ones and completion of the use of the 3G standard by 2027. The freed frequencies from 3G networks will be given to the LTE standard to increase speed and coverage, and the introduction of the 5G standard in Russia may be postponed until 2030.
