‘It’s the enemy’s tool’: HRC member proposes blocking YouTube

Igor Ashmanov, a member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, proposed blocking YouTube in response to the blocking of the account of the Federation Council.
On Tuesday, Google blocked the YouTube accounts of the Federation Council and the Vmeste-RF TV channel. These channels had over 200 thousand subscribers, 20 thousand videos were posted. The accounts published live broadcasts of meetings of the upper house of the Russian parliament, committees of the Federation Council, major forums, comments by senators, and much more.
“We need to prepare for the closure of YouTube,” said Ashmanov in his video statement on the Council’s Telegram channel. “I don’t really understand why the Ministry of Digital Development says over and over again that they won’t block YouTube in any case.”
Previously, proposals to block the platform, according to him, were answered that this was impossible, since people were used to watching video content. In his opinion, those days are over. “This is a tool of our enemy,” Ashmanov stressed. He noted that now in Russia there is a Video VK service and the Rutube platform, which works “quite well”.
